Is Java finally dead on Palm OS?

Your last chance to download the Java VM for Palm OS happens on Jan 12, 2008. A brief post on the Official Palm Blog may have announced the end of Java on the Palm.

At this point, it may be stating the obvious and perhaps no one even cares. When I bought my Treo 650 with Palm OS, I had hopes of Java development on my own phone. The IBM WebSphere Micro Edition JVM was easy enough to download, if you could find it between the Palm website and the Access website. Even worse was finding support for Java development between the two websites. The “vision” between Palm and it’s OS maker was unclear and discouraging.

My interest in Java on the Palm ended when the Java VM was only available for a fee to later Palm models. It just isn’t conceivable that a consumer will pay $5.99 to download and install the Java VM on their phone just to support a Java application.

Even worse, the most recent Palm Treo models are not even listed as compatible.

If you have a compatible phone and your model have it available for free, you can download the Java VM for Palm until Jan 12.
