My son as a Ben 10 action figure

My son is really into Ben 10. I think he identifies with the boy a lot because he’s young and he’s a smart-aleck. I think he also likes the idea of getting a super cool alien device that would give him alien powers.

I think Ben 10 action figures are the same for my son as the Kenner Star Wars action figures were to me. This year, I decided to do a repaint of the Ben Tennyson (the Ben 10) figure to make it look like my son. As I mentioned in a previous post, my son is able to recognize any wild-haired brunette boy as himself. So, I decided to buy an extra Ben 10 figure and repaint it to look like my son.

Here is what the original figure looks like:

I decided to repaint it to look like my sons red shirt with white sleeves with khaki cargo pants. I also decided to reshape the hair. I would also change the omnitrix wristwatch-style alien device to look like a purple sweatband with a baseball embroidered on it that my son got from Chuck E Cheese.

I had to grind off the vertical stripe from Ben’s t-shirt to make the shirt look smooth. I used red Rustoleum plastic spray paint.

I also took off the pointy tufts of hair on top of the original figures head and repainted it. The brush I used also added some texture. I also used a marker to change the eye color from green to brown.

For the long sleeves, I decided to use Sculpey. Sculpey is a polymer plastic that hardens when you heat it to 200 F. It worked fine, but check out the shrinkage that occurred:

Oops! I didn’t realize the plastic from the figure would be affected like that. The arms still work, though. I used a plastic paint to coat the sleeves and repaint the wristband.

The new wristband.

Repainting the legs was a pain. I used a beige Rustoleum plastic paint but it didn’t stick very well. I had even tried to buff off any coatings with my Dremel tool, but it didn’t help. I had to do coat after coat of spray paint. It was pretty tedious trying to cover the whole surface.

Here is the final figure.

Next time I think I would do something different with the paint. I’ll have to do more research.

Wow, now that’s some pretty nice crafting on your part. I’m a bit of a Ben 10 fan, as well as an artist, so naturally I’m impressed. The only bit of criticism I have is the effect on the clothing from the spray paint, making the shirt and pants (as well as hair, now that I think about it) a little too shiny. But it doesn’t ruin it, I still think this was a great gift for your son. Reminds me of when I made a drawing of Ben and Four-Arms for my little cousin on his tenth b-day (he’s a huge fan as well).
Do you have any other projects you’ve been working on? I would love to see more of your work.

@Steven, I have been working on something with Mighty World figures, but nothing with Ben 10 aliens. If the Gwen figure didn’t have the mask, I might make one look like my sons friend, though.

Some of the _new_ aliens look so cool. :)

Thanks to everyone for the comments!

man i wish i could do this to toys. 1st of id need toys as i dont have any since my parent threw em out. any way. this is really good but a minor critisism is that u shouldnt have painted the watch as it doesnt look as good now but apart from that brill. you should get the aliens and alter them slightly to be like ur son. like colours ect.if his shirts red, make x l r 8 red
    keep it up ;)
    bye
